How Your Venue Affects your Wedding Photography

There are three ways your venue will affect your wedding photography

  • Color

  • Light

  • Backdrop

I want to preface this blog by saying that I think you should pick your venue for so many reasons other than photography. If you find a place that aligns with your desires for your wedding and you also want to think about this, go right ahead!

Color:

Your colors can be greatly influenced by your venue. If you have an outdoor venue, the surrounding colors will be a huge part of your photos! This can be a beautiful and exciting part of your wedding. If you chose the right colors to compliment the time of year you are getting married, you can get some beautiful moments!

If your venue is an indoor venue, the color of the walls ceiling, and decor will affect your photos all the same. When you visit your venue space, you can look at the colors and textures that venue presents and decide if that is important to you or not.

Light:

Photography is all about light. The light that is available to your venue space will ABSOLUTELY influence how your photography will look. The photos directly above, are examples of what an indoor venue might look like if it is very dim. All of these photos were taken with either an on camera flash or off camera flashes.

Some characteristics these venues lend to your photography might be:

  • Darker backgrounds or light that quickly turns into shadow

  • Sharp shadows

  • Very contrasty

  • Fairy Lights, Candles, and Dance Lights really shine in this type of lighting

This can be a beautiful and exciting way to set up your venue! There are some very important things to note:

  • This is a style that will ABSOLUTELY require a professional photographer.

  • It is a style that requires specific knowledge and specific equipment!

  • Don’t be afraid to ask for examples of flash photography or lowlight work when deciding on a photographer.

Backdrop:

There is a saying in photography, “everything is in every photograph”.

As a photographer, it is my responsibility to find the best light, composition, and backdrop for each image. The venue you pick determines what I have to work with. The most beautiful examples of how backdrops influence your wedding photography is in the landscapes and architecture provided by your venue. You can keep this in mind when picking out your venue!
